Mini Goals
I work full time and have two young children at home. It is not possible for me to wake at 4AM and pound out words while guzzling pots of coffee. I can’t just come home from work and barricade myself in my office, expecting my wife to deal with dinner, homework and meltdowns. It would be nice, but I kind of like not living out of my car.
My solution? Baby Steps, Bob Wiley… I mean, mini goals. Writing in small spurts throughout the day has its pros and cons, of course. However, for someone like me who does not make a living as a professional writer, I need to take what I can get during the coarse of any given day.
Depending on my schedule, I’ll tell myself that I can write 200 words before noon, 200 words before dinner and 500-600 words in the evening. I keep my goals realistic and flexible in relation to other things on my agenda. Because of this, I rarely get discouraged if I don’t consistently meet them.
The point is, if you give yourself a realistic goal, you will achieve it. And attaining those goals motivates you to get up the next day and write more. Just not at 4AM…
